Kihnu is more than just an island.

Kihnu - island of sailors, fishermen and culture. Kihnu's traditional culture - clothing, language, music and crafts - is on UNESCO's list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage.

Active island life is a reality all year round.

Kihnu, with a population of around 700, is an island of community life, old cultural traditions and Kihnu language and song. For our locals, dancing and playing instruments are an integral part of life.

Over the centuries, the men of Kihnu have spent much of their time at sea, and the women have become the custodians and transmitters of the island's cultural heritage of crafts, dances, games and music. To this day, a Kihnu woman can be seen wearing a Kihnu long-striped skirt, or kördis, and riding a motorbike.

To experience the old traditions, it is worth visiting Kihnu during the feast days of the folk or church calendar, such as Midsummer, Midsummer Day or Christmas. For a lively celebration, there are the Räimer hike in May, the Home Cafés Days in June, the Sea Festival in July, the Dance Day in August and the Violin Festival in October...

The Kihnu Museum, which hosts visitors throughout the year, gives an overview of the island's history, including the life of the famous captain Kihnu Jinn. If you book in advance, you can do needlework under the guidance of master craftsmen or enjoy a performance by a folklore ensemble.

For the culture lover, Kihnu Island offers box car rides and fishing trips. From the top of the lighthouse you have a beautiful view of the whole island, the surrounding marshes and the sea. Read more about Kihnu activities at www.visitkihnu.ee
