What to do in Kihnu in winter?

The island of Kihnu is special both for its natural beauty and its traditional culture, where the Kihnu language, clothes, music and handicrafts are treasured. This unique island is known to have been settled in 1518, first mentioned in 1386 (Kyne). Kihnu is only 7 km long and 3.3 km wide, but nevertheless there is a lot to discover and visit. The island is surrounded by a shallow, rocky sea. There are 56 uninhabited bays around Kihnu, most of which are gravel and sandy and elongated in shape. Kihnu can be visited and explored all year round by the Kihnu Virve ship, which departs from Munalaiu harbour. Kihnu has a variety of homestays, tourist houses and holiday cottages, but few places offer accommodation in winter. Sepa farm has a homestay that can accommodate visitors all year round.

How to come to Kihnu in winter?

In winter, as in summer, the Kihnu-Munalaid ferry Kihnu Virve runs daily and several times a day. It can accommodate a maximum of 200 passengers and 30 cars. Weather permitting, it is possible to come to the island in a personal boat, a small boat or to hire a fishing boat/boat from Kihnu service providers. If you are coming to Kihnu on foot, Kihnu Sepa Farm House can provide you with transport by car or rent bicycles to get around the island. We are located just 3.6 km from Kihnu harbour in Rootsiküla, a 15-20 minute bike ride and 5 minutes by car. In case of bad winter weather, or if there is no ice, a float or plane can be arranged to the island. During the colder season we can accommodate up to 10 people at a time. Laureen, an insulated cottage with a fireplace, and Janeli, an electrically heated cottage, are available. There is also a newly renovated communal kitchen with a fireplace, a comfortable sofa, fridge, stove, some crockery, table games and a speaker for listening to music.

In winter, you'll enjoy more privacy in Kihnu as the island is less visited than in summer. You can come to us for a break from your daily routine and everyday life, and return home feeling rested and happier. You can rent a refreshing hot tub either in a homestay or right in the middle of nature (the location depends on the use permit and where our own land is located), we can transport the tub by trailer to a suitable location. We also have a Kihnu sauna - all part of your holiday.

In addition to body wraps and a refreshing Kihnu sauna, you can also visit the only blacksmith's workshop on Kihnu Island at Sepa Farm, a building that is now almost 200 years old. The family plans to renovate the blacksmith's hut in the new year. At the moment, the smithy is only open to guests of the Sepa farmhouse.

Where to eat in Kihnu in winter?

You can book in advance to eat at Sirel Farm, for example, or ask us for a quote and we will organise catering for you. From the selection of Kihnu home-cooked meals, you can find Kihnu pastries, Kihnu bread, fish dishes, Kihnu beer and other home-made delicacies. It is also possible to prepare your own food in the communal kitchen of our homestay. There are also two grocery shops on the island - Kuras Shop and Kihnu Shop. What to see and visit in Kihnu in winter?

The island of Kihnu is an attractive place for culture, hiking and nature lovers. For nature lovers, because Kihnu is visited by a wide variety of birds, as the Kihnu Strait is a breeding, nesting and migration area of pan-European importance, and therefore all of the islets are located in a nature reserve. In addition, Kihnu has a powerful pine forest, beaches, the Kakra promontory, plants, cows/cattle on the beach pasture and waterfalls. In winter, Kihnu's nature is particularly magical, as it is quieter than in summer and there are more birds and animals to see.

Hikers and culture lovers can take a 23-kilometre-long Kihnu Tour on the island. In Kihnu, it is worth visiting Kihnu Lighthouse, Kihnu Museum, Kihnu St. Nicholas Church, Kihnu Cemetery, Metsamaa Heritage Village, the memorial stone to Kihnu Jõnnu (located next to the Sepa farmhouse), the square of the old Kihnu Folk House and the exhibition gallery of the Kihnu Folk House.
